I need help with my Mousetrap Car?

I'm taking an engineering class which involves physics and an ability to compete under pressure against other classes for an A+. Are first unit is to construct a mousetrap and run it through three competitions, I've run the math and if i get 1-5 place in two events I can get an A+ for the class. the three events are speed, achieve an exact distance of 12 feet (3.8016 meters) and strength (car that pulls the most weight).

I can't buy a mousetrap kit, it has to be made by myself, but I can take and apply ideas from other mousetrap cars. My main problem is how to build the bridge and equations I need to use to get the car to go 12 feet exactly.

I have about a week and a half to complete it can you help me in any way, sketches, equations, sites etc. I would greatly appreciate it.

For the body of the car use a radio shack projects box. Pick the perfect size because you will conceal a small motor and a 9 volt battery inside. mount the trap on top of this housing, gear or connect the wheels and shaft through the box housing but put the pulley for the trap spring outside next to a wheel. Drill two very small hole into and through the trap and box to run wire to and from your battery. Your contacts or switch will be the metal parts on the trap. When it closes, the connection will be complete and the motor and battery will take over going all the way down the hall without stopping! No you will not meet the 12 foot mark but the laughs will be worth it! My teacher was so impressed he gave me an A+
Anyway the 12 foot mark can be reached if you want to by simply adding a string break. It will take a few trial times. You have to measure the right amount of thread to reach your mark. As the mouse trap is pulling on the string attached to the axle, your premeasered thread will be wrapping itself around the other side of the axle bringing the car to a stop at the right moment.
