I'm going to the art store to get supplies for an acrylic painting. What kind of supplies should I buy? I'll be painting a landscape of a mountain and river.
1) Acrylic paints, brushes, palette, canvas... obviously
2) What kind of thinner?
3) Anything else I'm missing?
thanks!!
You really don't need to buy a pallet.
For acrylics you just use water to thin it.
Make sure you get brushes for acrylic paint.
Try to get different sizes of brushes.
TIPS:
And for painting especially landscapes do not be afraid to mix your colors on the painting itself.
It's easier to do a wash before actually starting. It's like sketching but with the paint.
Kinda like an outline.
All you do is add a lot of water to your paint.
For a wash you don't really need a lot of paint.

I am doing a painting right now and I want to put neon red over neon blue in kind of a streaked pattern. First, how can I make neon red and neon blue looking colors with Prussian Blue and Cadmium Red? Second, will those two colors combine into an ugly purple if I paint the red over the blue directly after I paint on the blue?
Here is an extremely rough rendition of the painting. I am planning on adding the blue and red to the large planet. The colors in the image are filling the entire area that they are placed in, it's just really hard to draw with a mouse. Tell me what you think of the design. The circles are actual circles in my painting.
You need to keep the light edge on each color to suggest neon tube glow if you are attempting to recreate neon light on canvas otherwise:
Yes, oil painting blue over red will get you an unlovely purple. paint up to crossing point, break the line and leave white canvas for the next color...this will be more difficult than just painting over the color, but will net the pure color you desire.

Table Lamps by Moonlight
When we think of Japanese porcelain, we quite often think of brightly coloured Imari, but not all Japanese Imari was brightly coloured.
One famous early 19th century porcelain maker at Seto, in Japans Aichi Prefecture, decorated his porcelain in a very distinctive sapphire blue, with typical naturalistic, Zen influenced subjects, such as grasses overhung by pines, weathered rock formations with willows and wind blown trees.
"Seto" itself refers to both the city and the style of ceramics that originated there. Seto is also one of Japan's famous “six old kilns”. Porcelain came to Seto rather late. It first appeared in the beginning of the 19th century when Kato Tamikichi returned to Seto from Kyushu Island and successfully fired cobalt blue-decorated porcelain, Tamikichi is, in fact, regarded as "the father of porcelain" in the Seto region.
The Antique and Vintage Table Lamp Co illustrate a fine Seto, “Moon Flask”, lamp, decorated in Seto’s beautiful sapphire blue.

However, to see the larger picture, we need to look across the long history of Japanese art and design, to see some of the many influences, both internal and external which have contributed to today’s recognizable “Japanese design”.
Until Admiral Perry’s opening of Japan to the West (1854) with its both positive and negative results, Japanese art and design was almost unknown to the Western world. Perry’s encounter with Japan opened the flood gates to an East / West exchange of ideas, rarely seen before. It was within a decade that Japanese design concepts arrived in the West.
Two outstanding names will serve to illustrate this influence on Western art. James Whistler, the great American / British painter of the mid to late 19th century. He was one of the first westerners to be influenced by the artistic tradition of Japan and he developed a rather aesthetic response to living, he particularly admired the Japanese artistic attitude to not distinguishing between fine and decorative art. His appreciation of this led Whistler to a wide range of artistic pursuits, heavily influenced by his newfound “art of Japan”.
The second example is the master of French impressionism, Claude Monet. We do not know if the famous story of Monet’s discovery of Japanese art is true, or anecdotal! But legend has it that Monet has fled to Amsterdam to escape the 1871 Prussian siege of Paris. There, or, so the story goes, he observed some Japanese block prints being used in a food shop as wrapping paper, he could not believe what he was seeing, so impressed was he, that he purchased all available, . The purchase changed his life — and the history of Western art.
Monet was never shy about his fascination with Japan and its art and 1876, five years after that visit to the Dutch food shop, he painted “La Japonaise”, showing his first wife Camille in a kimono against a background decorated with uchiwa (Japanese paper fans). At Giverny, where he moved in 1883 at age 42, he built a Japanese bridge over a Japanese pond in a Japanese garden, and he spent the rest of his life painting that private paradise — and especially its water lilies.
Not only Western art was influenced by Japan, but, interiors, fashion and all forms of art, style and design. This exchange of ideas was two way, with Weston design concepts being used in Japan. Perhaps for that reason Impressionism caught on early in Japan and still remains highly popular. This exchange of ideas was seen, particularly in the porcelain produced by the great Japanese ceramics kilns, with its one thousand year old tradition.
Japanese porcelain and pottery, until the opening of Japan to the West, was both traditional and highly aesthetic, understood, only by, the then, insular and very conservative, Japanese society. The overriding concept was to hold to the rigidly, proscribed forms.
This highly aesthetic style was not understood by a Western audience and it soon became apparent that changes needed to be made for a Western export market to succeed. By example, the Western market is very familiar with Japanese “Imari” porcelain, with its’ bright pallet of colours, primarily based on iron red and underglaze cobalt blue, this always forms the basic Imari pallet, which can then have a range of additional colours added.
This popular Japanese porcelain is called “Imari” due to the fact that it was exported by its various makers through the port of “Imari”. These bright patterns were primarily developed for a Western market and were, in fact, based on the patterns of traditional kimono brocaded textiles.
The West’s love of Japanese art and design has never faulted and continues to evolve.

what are some essential art supplies that you feel every REAL artist (drawing/painting stuff) must have?
can you give me the brand
im talking about things like markers, pencils, paper, ect.
thanx
i didnt mean to offend anybody, i know every artist has their own style. so, ill try and rephrase my question, what are some thing YOU consider essential for the type of art you make...
this is absurd. Art comes in many forms and mediums. All artists have their own preference. You should try different mediums until you find one you like. I used to use wires and fashion them into figures. I also enjoyed drawing, wether it be with a regular pen, or some coloured pencils.. again try out some different mediums and then fine tune your supplies.

If the current economic climate is getting you down then turn to art supplies to cheer up.
An increasing number of people are purchasing art supplies as painting and drawing is a relatively cheap and fun way to pass the time during a time when there is little disposable income available.
Sales of art supplies are also booming because more celebrities are revealing an interest in painting which is encouraging their fans to get involved in expressing themselves artistically.
Famous faces such as Beyonce, Sir Paul McCartney and Pierce Brosnan have all come out as aspiring artists and declared their love for painting and drawing using art supplies.
Pop star Beyonce revealed a passion for painting as she believes the process to be therapeutic and she enjoys interpreting the results.
Brosnan trained as a commercial artist and pursued a career in art as an illustrator before going into acting but he rediscovered his passion for art supplies in the late eighties and now spends much of his free time between film shoots painting.
Sir Paul did not start properly painting until he was forty as he felt inhibited by his lack of formal art training despite winning a prize for a drawing he did as a teenager but he is now happy to paint regularly.
Jonathan Church, a supermarket spokesman, told the Daily Mail that sales of paint brushes and sketch books have been boosted by a growing number of people looking to get in touch with their creative side.
He said: 'We put the increase in the last twelve months down to more and more Brits taking up creative hobbies such as painting. Taking up art as a hobby means costs are relatively low but families can spend hours together taking part.'
Mr Church also told the publication that more and more families are looking to take part in activities that are inclusive of all age groups and abilities and most importantly do not break the bank during tough economic times.
"We know entertaining yourself and your family on a budget has become more important than ever to our customers over the last year. Hobbies such as painting are ideal because the materials cost small amounts to buy but will go a long way."
Mr Church went onto say that he expected a further increase in art supplies sales as Britain enjoys learning to get more creative.

My suggestion is that you first make a color chart using your paints, on your new paper. Make a strong stroke of saturated color first, then rinse your brush (leave it somewhat wet) and draw another stroke right next to and touching the first, which should pull some of the color in a graduated wash, and continue pulling that stroke away from the strong paint until it is very pale. Do this with each of the colors. That way you will know what each can do, what it looks like when dry, and whether the color is warm or cool. (Label them when done, and it helps to do them in the order you have them in the palette.)
Next paint a long line of each color vertically across your paper (medium strength of color, not too wet(pale) or too dry(dark)) . . . and let them dry completely. Now do the same in the other direction. This will give you a grid that tells you how each color affects the others when you layer them. Watercolors are painted using multiple layers of thin washes until you have built up the colors you want. See how the colors can become completely different when layered. . . and you thought you only had 45 colors!)
Next pick one shade of each color and make a puddle (a puddle is just a wet spot of color, and it is not deep, just wet!) on your paper with that color. Then begin picking random colors and drop them into the puddle . . . and see what happens. If the color you drop in runs wildly into the other color, this is called charging. . . and it is one of watercolor's most wonderful techniques. You will eventually want to know which colors charge into which other colors well, so you can use this in your artwork. You also want to know which to avoid in case you don't want this effect.
Even though you might be anxious to jump right in and paint a picture, practicing just a few exercises and techniques first will help you greatly when you do finally compose and paint your first painting. But how can you expect success when you don't know what your colors look like, what they will do for you, and how to handle a brush???
I would suggest adding a #8 or #10 round brush to your set, as the #6 is really too small. Always. . . ALWAYS. . . use the biggest brush you can use for what you are painting. . . it prevents your work from becoming tight, fussy, and overworked.
Other things to do after you get started. . . . practice mixing your own colors, especially greens (yellow and blue with tiny touches of red or orange) using all your combinations of colors. Cerulean blue and yellow makes a completely different green than ultramarine blue and new gamboge!
Never paint things a solid color. Watercolor is the medium of wonderful color mixing RIGHT ON THE PAPER! Learn what happens when you paint wet into wet and when you paint with a relatively dry brush. Learn how to use thin washes of color (called glazing) over dry paint to warm or cool the color, add shadows, and create deeper color interest.
And remember the white of your paper is the white in your paintings. You must learn to "save your whites" which means paint around areas where you want white or very pale color. If your watercolor pans included a white, don't use it when you want sparkly white. . . use the white of your paper!
good luck.

Tips on Creating a Halloween Collage Art
Collage art is method in art that includes cutting and pasting natural or processed materials to a painted or unpainted work surface. It is primarily in the visual arts, created from an assemblage of different kinds put together to create a different whole art. A collage can include newspapers clippings, ribbons, pieces of tinted or hand-made papers, parts of other artworks, photos together with other found materials that are clued to a piece of paper, construction paper or canvas.
Making collage art helps you change common elements like paper and found objects into a work of art. Since it is the month of October it is suitable to create a Halloween collage art, it's particularly enjoyable to create because you can easily establish a feeling of spookiness or humor with old-fashioned Halloween cards, cutout words, and altered images.
Listed here are suggestions on how to start a Halloween collage art:
First be inspired by looking at the Internet to get ideas for Halloween collage art. There are a lot of images online with vibrant images with ghosts, pumpkins and witches. If you're creating a collage art with small children it would be advisable to view the pictures to make sure the images to be kid safe.
Second buy some card stock that has a Halloween, autumn, or spooky concept. Use it as the backdrop, or color a canvas stretcher board dark or midnight blue. You can also make it more artistic by having your own or the kids drawing on the collage art. It'll give a hint of your individuality.
Third is look for pictures again you could find various online. Several art collage designers use Victorian photos, but you may use family pictures or cutouts from magazines and books. Good sources for pictures are thrift outlets and yard sales. Some graphic artists advertise collage sheets for download and printed out or delivered in the mail. Photos from Halloween greeting cards are also available in this format.
Forth attach the background to a support with clear tacky glue or a glue stick. Any kind of flat, solid surface that will not twist is appropriate. Use a board, a canvas stretcher, a paper mache or wood plaque, a playing card, or even a tag. You can also produce a shadow box through an empty candy jar or shallow box.
Fifth cut out photos. Cut witch hats from black paper, designed paper, or newsprint. Stick photo to the background and affix the witch hat. Clip words and phrases with a Halloween or spooky theme from worn out textbooks or magazines. Insert them to the collage.
Sixth add some extra in your collage art, such as cut outs from vintage or modern Halloween greeting cards, worn out jewelry and buttons, scrabble tiles, container caps with words stamped on them, fibers, and beads. Use chalks, watercolors, distressing inks or rubber stamps to focus on or add more features. Be as creative as you could be.
Seventh punch holes in the item and fix wire to hold it or maybe you may tape the Halloween collage art on the wall.
Collage art is really a fun pastime for you and your whole family members particularly if have small ones having wild imagination or creativity. It's actually an art that you can preserve and show them when they grow older. About the Author

Tips on Oil Painting - the Qualities of Color
Any color in existence has three qualities that completely determine the color:
1) Hue 2) Value 3) Intensity
We will now precisely explain what each quality means:
* Hue - The hue of a color is simply the name of the color. For example, yellow, red, green-yellow, etc.
Artists often talk about the temperature of a color or a painting. Temperature is really an element of hue. The warms colors are the yellows and the reds while the cool colors are the greens and the blues.
However, temperature is a relative term. For example although two different blues are both cool colors, one blue can be warmer than another blue.
For example French Ultramarine Blue leans towards the violet while Phthalo Blue leans towards green. Therefore French Ultramarine Blue is a warmer blue than Phthalo Blue although both blues are cool.
* Value - Value refers to the lightness or darkness of the color. If you squint you will see that, for example, that yellow is lighter than blue. The value of a color is actually the most important property of a color in relation to painting.
* Intensity - Intensity of a color refers to its brightness or dullness. The more saturated or the purer a color is the more intense it is. A color coming straight out of the tube is in its most intense state. Any mixture will dull the tube color and therefore make it less intense. It is however possible to make most mixtures more intense by adding a touch of one color or another.
Now, if you can nail down the hue, the value, and the intensity of a color you will have reproduced that color. Based on this observation we can outline a mental procedure to guide us with the mixing of colors:
* Observe - First you observe the color. For example, is it a certain blue or is it red?
* Select - Then you select the color on your palette that resembles the observed color the best.
* Analyze - Of course, as you would expect, the pure tube color on your palette will rarely match the color you observed. Therefore, we now must identify how the two colors differ from each other. In this, we need to concentrate on three things: hue, value, and intensity. Does the color need to be adjusted in terms of hue? For example, does the observed blue lean more towards the violet or towards the green? Does the value need to be adjusted? For example, does this blue need to be darkened or lightened? Finally, does the intensity of the color need to be adjusted? For example, does the blue need to be brighter or duller? One, two, or all three of these qualities may need adjustment.
So, in this article we have looked at the three important qualities of color: hue, value, and intensity. We defined what they are and were able to extract a procedure that we can follow every time we wish to transfer an observed color to our canvas.
In the beginning you will make many mistakes and the going will be slow. It is generally hard to judge the three qualities of a color and it takes practice. This is particularly the case with judging values and intensities. Nevertheless, you need to practice this procedure every day and over and over again. However, one day it will become second nature just like riding a bicycle. Also, in the beginning don’t be too fussy but try over time to become better and better at it.

let me attempt to alleviate your fear by picking one specific group found in this set: the FDC materials (all colorants). FDC is a acronym standing for FOOD, DRUG, & COSMETIC. these things provide color to those final products. generally, the largest conc (or amt) you'd subject the body to is by ingesting (or eating) the substance. drug would come next....cosmetics the least as they usually are only applied to the skin so absorption through that medium is very low.
the items have been certified (i believe through the FDA, US) and are safe for such use.

What painting supplies would you suggest for my art style?
I am a teenage artist, always interested in art but never got around to doing anything time consuming until now.
I wanted to go for a canvas with some cool colors like blue and purple. maybe a cool orange too.
i want to paint abstractly, if it makes a difference.
any color/brand suggestions as to what will help me? What kind of brushes work best for something like abstract/impressionism?
thanks!
I would use acrylic paint and for abstract effects try to glob on the paint with a palate knife and use medium to large sized brushes to work further. Don't get too hung up on brushes, true artists go through them like Kleen-ex!! Good luck to you!

My 19 year old son has this problem..I need help..?
It started about a month ago, my 19 year old son, Claudius revealed that he is obsessed with certain weird rituals. He likes to drink his own urine only after it has sitten out in the sun for 2 days, he sleeps under his bed, rather than on top. and last May he confessed to building a shabby cage out of sticks and twine to house street cats, set his old bicycle on fire and lunged it at the animals. Fortunately, none of them got hurt. He is very wild boy, last week he licked the back of his mothers neck and I decked him on reflex. He later threatened to carve out the U.S. Constitution using a bowie knife on my back while I slept. I haven't slept in a week and 3 days. I need HELP! what is wrong with my son? He masturbates onto toilet paper and then situates it upon his private area and struts about the house saying how he's the fourth and filthiest version of Adam from the long lost congegal garden. I punched him out of reflex. HELP!
this issue is beyond something that you can handle alone...he needs a professional RIGHT AWAY! those are scary behaviors, and the hurting of animals can be a warning sign of a sociopath. please get him help NOW so that you and your wife are safe.

What Type of Cutlery Sets Suits You?
Cutlery refers to hand implement used in preparing, eating and cutting food. Different types of cutlery sets are being introduced in the market for convenient outdoor and party events. Types may vary from the materials used and the personal preferences of its users.
A cutlery set is comprised of spoons, forks and knives, along with trays and dishes. It is made from different materials like gold, steel, silver, plastic and pewter. Different types of cutlery sets include the following:
• Plastic
• Stainless steel
• Silver
• Vintage
• Japanese
• and professional
You can also consider the following characteristics in order to match the type you want:
• Plastic
Plastic cutlery is disposable. It is perfect for picnics, parties, buffets and other outdoor celebrations. This set includes a knife, forks and spoons which can feed 8 or more people. It can be washable but it is more often thrown away. It is also good for packed lunches on long journeys. In fact, some plastic cutleries are also part of children's toy sets.
Expendable cutlery having a posh twist is somewhat more stylish with bright colors. This would include green, black, red, purple and clear sets. Pandora's Deluxe Plastic Flatware is also one of the manufacturers which offer this kind of plastic cutlery.
• Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is a composite of different steel alloys made with 11.5% chromium or even nickel. The higher the nickel content, the more it will not stain nor corrode. Different grades and surface finishes are introduced so as to suit the material. Stainless steel prices vary with the specifications or the steel alloy percentage.
• Silver
Silver is a precious metal used in making cutlery. Most manufacturers use silver in order to showcase a bright lunar shine, making it more valuable. The metal alloy needs to pass a state-of-the-art technology set that has the highest standards. Silver cutlery adapts to warm dishes, possessing a bacteria killing effect.
Silver cutlery can be hard-silver plated or made with real silver. Hard silver plating has high grade glossiness. It is also rust-proof, hard-wearing, dishwasher safe and possesses a high practical value. It is made from 65% copper, 12% nickel and 23% zinc. The layer of this silver is applied to this material in a galvanic bath.
WMF, one of the best silver cutlery manufacturers, had developed a technique in silver hardening. The 90 g silver provides protection from scratches.
Hence, real silver cutlery is made of pure silver which is soft and not stable. Sterling silver showcases 92.5 % hard types of pure silver.
Vintage
Vintage cutlery is classic or old-fashioned but first-class types. It is made from silver or with plastic design handles. Hardwood handles with different textures are also appealing. Vintage cutlery can last a lifetime when properly maintained.
Japanese
Japanese cutlery is made from high quality Japanese steel. These are forged instruments for the kitchen. It is proven to be hard and incredibly sharp. Most professionals prefer this type of cutlery, along with its exclusive designs.
Forged VG-10 super steel blades can be used in making Japanese cutlery. On each side is a clad having 16 layers of SUS410 high carbon stainless steel. This kind of steel produces a no-rust blade, as well as it can reduce the sticking of food and provide less damage onto the blade.
Most Japanese chefs use a Santoku knife. It is useful for straight cutting, slicing and for the mincing of vegetables and meat. The Deba and Nakiri knife is also an all-time favorite. It is used with a traditional Chef's knife. These Japanese cutleries are really superior and very functional. In fact, Japan made its knives with the assurance of a lifetime warranty.
Professional
Professional cutlery sets are mostly used by food industry professionals. It often comes with a wooden block or case, having 3 or more pieces of knives along with a spoon and fork. Aside from this, it can be satin finish, gold or silver plated and hard silver within wooden handles.
